It’s bright, hot, and very articulate. First produced in , the original Model 55 Unidyne microphone was the first single-element unidirectional dynamic microphone. The capsules look the same. First produced in , Shure now makes an updated version called the 55SH Series II, which is essentially the same as the year old Unidyne except for modern internal acoustic components are used to bring it up to present day requirements. Iconic chrome-plated design with vibrant blue color additions, Tailored frequency response for natural vocals and speech, High gain-before-feedback and excellent off-axis rejection, Shock-mounted cartridge minimizes handling noise and ensures quiet operation, Rugged die cast casing for reliability under rigorous conditions, Self-tensioning swivel mount, permits tilting through 45 degrees forward and 80 degrees backward. Integrated, swivel stand mount is included.
This microphone is excellent for vocal pickup with its characteristic Shure presence peak. I recorded a Martin D28 acoustic guitar with the mic positioned above the twelfth fret. Given the choice between the two, I would be more likely to suggest the Super 55 for a female vocalist The benefit of that off-axis rejection is much less feedback. We provide this information solely as a service to customers seeking such a hybrid microphone. I removed the face plate on the 55 and the lid to the I tend to do some more airy, breathy vocals than our other singer, and I have often found that the monitors get up to feedback levels much more quickly than they would for our other singer, who tends to sing out more. Aside from the different element, blue foam and the lack of a switch on the Super 55, they are in the same dfluxe and very similar for frequency response, although I believe the 55SH has a bit more bottom end.

55SH Series II with Beta 58 cartridge | Knowledge Base | Shure Americas
My only gripe is that plosives tend to come through quite a lot, so you need to chill out on your p’s and b’s. Although the mic provides stellar sound Usper have found that the frequency range of the Beta 58 I have seems to be wider, offering me a “fuller, richer” sound.

Rode K2 Tube Vocal Microphone. I want to buy one for my wife’s birthday gift but not sure what the differences are, except the cardioid pattern and the price. The 55sh is a cardioid.
Bass player had a 55SH here for a while. Integrated, swivel stand mount is included. The guy with the “cool looking Mic”. How do you review an icon? Exactly the same sized chrome-plated die-casting is used and differences begin with an enclosed supercardioid element behind a vibrant blue foam material.

I believe his main weapon was a Line 6 wireless. One of the chief differences between the two, and my reason for getting it, is that it’s a supercardioid. Apr 26, 1. Looks were important to him, and so because of his musical bag, he bought a Shure I don’t feel like the aesthetic of that mic would work anymore once it’s on a boom anyway.
Apr 26, 2. Maybe someone who has the 55SH can contrast their experience with mine. Su;er is more than one way to do this. Serifs tend to do some more airy, breathy vocals than our other singer, and I have often found that the monitors get up to feedback levels much more quickly than they would for our other singer, who tends to sing out more.
The discussion thread on the is here! I’ve not had much experience with the regular 55SH, but I am extremely happy with the super.
I am not a mic expert. Additional Support Ask a Question. Advertise on the most comprehensive and widely viewed musicians’ website. I find vd is difficult to use as a guitarist, because I have to lean in uncomfortably, and the mass is difficult to balance on a boom, so now I let our harmonica player use it for vocals.
I find that it flatters my voice very well, and is almost condenser like in its sound. I have come to love my 55 over the past couple of years.

If the mic must be held in the singer’s hand, we strongly recommend using the stem of the microphone as the grasping point. You could also try asking this on HC’s live sound forum.
Product Comparison: Shure 55SH vs Shure Super 55
The Model 55 unlike competing omnidirectional mics at that time zeries able to operate in close proximity to loudspeakers without creating feedback.

Shuer must log in or sign up to reply here. For me, that means being able to sing with more nuance over the band, who is usually doing something loud regardless. The supercardioid pattern has a much greater off axis rejection, but you also have to sing into it dead on.
